Ten Reasons to Try Online Dating

Top Five Things to Avoid on a First Date

Ever walk away from a bad date and wonder, "what just happened?" Ever turn to your friends for comfort only to discover they have a list a mile long of the things you did wrong? It's hard to see, or even know the mistakes we make during a date. We're too busy trying to keep the date going to know we're making a bad impression. Yet, everything we do, from getting ready for the date until the date is over can have a negative effect on the outcome. Here is a list of five things to avoid on a first date:

  1. Overusing perfume or cologne. Perfumes and colognes should enhance your natural scent, not cover it up. When you're aroused, perfume and cologne mix with your natural scent. Your scents increase. Your body is designed to attract a mate through pheromones. They're powerful stuff. Don't kill your natural attraction scent by dousing yourself in perfume/cologne. Here's a tip: Spray your perfume/cologne into the air a few feet in front of you and walk through the mist. If you're not using the spray bottle, dab yourself in a couple of spots (i.e. behind the ear, wrists).
  2. Restaurants with messy food. People are sensitive about the way they look while eating. When trying to decide on where to eat, consider a few things. Will you have to eat with your hands? Does the food require special eating utensils? Are there messy sauces to consider? How spicy is the food? If you want to try something exotic and unusual, definitely run it by your date.
  3. Relying on someone else to pay. If you haven't discussed who's paying, it's better to bring enough money to pay for yourself. It's generally accepted that the person who asks you out, is the one who pays. But, dates don't always play out that way. Better safe than sorry.
  4. Discussing religion and politics. These two topics start wars and drive people to riot. People feel strongly about their religion and politics, and are usually unafraid to express their views and beliefs. When you start dating, you should be trying to find things you have in common. Leave these topics for a later date.
  5. Talking about your past relationships. If you can't spend an evening talking about something other than your last relationship, you probably aren't ready to start a new one. A first date should never turn into a therapy session. Furthermore, the biggest turn off is having to listen to someone whine and complain about their ex. Save this talk for your close friends and family.

There are a lot of expectations going into a first date. This can cause you to be nervous and over think the date. You can make a mistake without realizing it. You start talking about one thing, it reminds you of another topic, and the next thing you know, you're talking about your last break-up. It happens. But, it doesn't have to happen to you.

Dating Dilemmas

Nobody wants to be single. OK, some people take time off from relationships to find themselves, excel in their career, buckle down and get through school, but in the grand scheme of things, nobody longs to spend their twilight years alone.
